Storm Damage Repair & Inspections

Free roof inspections and thorough storm damage assessments. We document everything for insurance claims and repair what's actually broken, not what isn't.

Roof inspector marking hail damage on asphalt shingles

North Georgia gets hit hard by spring and summer storms, hail, high winds, and the occasional tornado all leave their mark on roofs across the metro Atlanta area. After a major storm event, our phones don't stop ringing for days. Here's how we handle it.

What to Do in the First 72 Hours After a Storm

  1. Stay off the roof. It's not worth the risk, and walking around can damage shingles further or compromise an insurance claim.
  2. Document everything from the ground. Take photos and video of any visible damage, debris, or missing shingles.
  3. Cover any active leaks from inside the attic if possible, buckets, tarps, or plastic sheeting to limit interior damage.
  4. Call us for a free inspection at (706) 983-5557. Same-day inspections are usually available after major storms.
  5. Don't sign anything from a door-knocker contractor. Storm-chaser scams are rampant in North Georgia after every major weather event. More on that below.

What We Look for During a Storm Damage Inspection

A real storm damage inspection takes 30-60 minutes and includes a walk of the entire roof, photographs of every penetration and slope, and a written report. Specifically, we check for:

  • Hail bruising: circular impact marks where granules have been knocked loose, exposing the asphalt mat underneath
  • Wind-lifted or missing shingles: common at rakes, ridges, and any south or west-facing slope
  • Damaged or displaced flashing at chimneys, valleys, and pipe penetrations
  • Granule accumulation in gutters and downspouts (a sign of impact damage even if visible bruising is subtle)
  • Damaged ridge vents, soffit vents, or gable ends that often go unnoticed but compromise the system
  • Interior signs of leaks: water staining in the attic or on ceilings

Beware of Storm-Chaser Contractors

After every major storm in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, Buford, and similar areas, out-of-state contractors flood the neighborhoods knocking on doors. Many of them are reputable. Many are not. Red flags to watch for: pressure to sign a contract before an insurance adjuster has even been out, offers to "waive" or "absorb" your deductible (which is illegal in Georgia), no local address, and the inability to provide a Georgia certificate of insurance on request. Bishop JD Roofing has been local since 2014. We'll be here next year, and the year after that.

Insurance Claim Documentation

If your roof has legitimate storm damage, we document it with the precision adjusters need to approve a claim quickly: dated, time-stamped photos of every affected area, measurements, and a written scope of work in industry-standard format. We'll meet your adjuster on-site and walk the roof together if you'd like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What North Georgia homeowners ask after a hail or wind storm.

What should I do right after a storm?

First, stay off the roof yourself. It is dangerous and climbing up can make an insurance claim harder to document. Note anything you can see from the ground, then call us for a free inspection. Same-day inspections are usually available after major storms.

What does storm damage actually look like?

It is not always obvious from the ground. Hail can bruise shingles and knock off the protective granules, and wind can lift, crease, or tear shingles and damage flashing. We get on the roof and document all of it with photos for your claim.

Should I file an insurance claim?

If the damage is functional rather than purely cosmetic and it exceeds your deductible, filing usually makes sense. We inspect first and give you an honest read before you file, so you are not opening a claim you do not actually need.

How do I avoid storm-chaser contractors?

Be wary of out-of-town crews who knock door to door after a storm, pressure you to sign on the spot, or offer to cover your deductible. We are a local, licensed, GAF-certified company you can find here year-round, long after the storm has passed.

Do you provide documentation for my insurance claim?

Yes. We document the damage with photos and measurements and provide the records your adjuster needs to approve a legitimate claim. Thorough documentation is what gets claims approved quickly.
