Winder is the county seat of Barrow County, with a 2020 census population of 18,338 (~19,700 by 2023 estimates). The city sits about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta along Highway 211 and Highway 29. Winder was originally a Creek Indian village called Snodon, then known as 'Jug Tavern' through the 1800s, before being renamed in 1893 to honor John H. Winder of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Fort Yargo State Park (with its 1792 log fort) is just outside town — one of Georgia's most-visited state parks.
Winder's historical significance is also tied to U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell Jr., who served nearly 40 years in the Senate and was a member of the Warren Commission. The Russell family home is part of Winder's heritage. The city's housing stock ranges from older homes near downtown to newer subdivisions on the outskirts (Anchor Heights, Arrowhatchee, Yargo Township, Cedar Creek, Apalachee Crossing). Median home values are around $270,000.
